- From Hobby to Passion: My 13-Year Journey to Becoming a Tattoo Artist
Starting a new career is never easy, especially when it means leaving behind something you love. For me, tattooing was not just a job; it became a calling that shaped my life over 14 years. This is the story of how I turned a hobby into a passion and built a career from scratch, facing challenges and making tough choices along the way. Choosing Tattooing Over Dancing Before tattooing, dancing was my world. It was my hobby, my escape, and something I loved deeply. But when I decided to pursue tattooing, I faced a real dilemma. I had been saving money for years to study tattooing, but that meant I had to stop spending on dancing. It was a hard choice, but I chose tattooing because I felt a stronger pull toward creating art on skin. This decision marked the beginning of a slow and steady journey. I didn’t become a tattoo artist overnight. Instead, I moved carefully, learning and growing at my own pace. The Early Years: Learning and Struggling Alone The first few years were the hardest. I worked mostly from home, practicing on fake skin and friends who trusted me. I didn’t have a community of tattoo artists to guide me or share experiences with. Sometimes, I worked in uncomfortable studios that didn’t feel like the right fit. During this time, I was searching for my style and trying to understand who I was as an artist. It was a lonely process, but it taught me resilience and patience. I learned that progress doesn’t always come fast, and sometimes you have to trust the process even when it feels uncertain. A Turning Point in Poland In 2018, something changed. I was invited for a guest spot in Poland, which was my first opportunity to work abroad. This experience opened my eyes to new techniques, styles, and a wider tattoo community. It also gave me confidence that I could make a living doing what I loved. After that guest spot, I decided to stay abroad. I never returned to live in Ukraine. Instead, I traveled across Europe, working in different countries and learning from every new experience. Each place taught me something new about tattooing and about myself. Building a Supportive Community For a long time, I felt isolated from the tattoo community. But over the years, I connected with talented artists and friends who supported me. Today, I am grateful to be part of a network that encourages growth and creativity. Having this support has made a huge difference. It reminds me that no matter how tough the journey, finding people who believe in you can help you keep going. Moving to Canada and Looking Ahead In 2023, I took another big step and moved to Canada. This move represents a new chapter filled with opportunities and challenges. I am excited to continue developing my craft and sharing my story with others who might be on a similar path. Lessons from My Journey Looking back, my journey taught me several important lessons: Patience is key : Success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes years of practice and persistence. Make tough choices : Sometimes you have to give up something you love to pursue something greater. Keep learning : Every experience, good or bad, is a chance to grow. Build connections : Surround yourself with people who support and inspire you. Believe in yourself : Your path might be long, but passion and self-belief will carry you through. Encouragement for Aspiring Artists If you are thinking about starting a career in tattooing or any creative field, remember that your journey will be unique. It might take time to find your style and place, but that’s okay. What matters most is loving what you do and trusting that your hard work will pay off. Don’t be afraid to make sacrifices or step out of your comfort zone. Your passion can lead you to places you never imagined.
